Diwali Dress for Women 2026: What to Wear Across All Five Days

Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026 this year, nearly three weeks later than last year.

If that feels late, it is. 2026 has an adhik maas, the extra lunar month that occasionally gets inserted into the Hindu calendar, and it has pushed the entire festive season back. Which means two things for what you wear. You have more time than you think to plan. And the weather on Diwali night will be noticeably cooler than it was last November, so the fabrics that worked then may not work now.

When is Diwali 2026?

Five days, each asking for something different. Nobody needs five new outfits, but treating all five the same is how you end up overdressed for a morning of shopping and underdressed for the night that actually gets photographed.

What should you wear on each day of Diwali?

Dhanteras | Friday, 6 November

A day of shopping, cleaning and a small evening puja. You’ll be in and out of the house, possibly at a jeweller’s, definitely on your feet.

A kurta set is the answer, enough detail to feel festive when the diyas go on, comfortable enough to spend the afternoon in.

The warm-up. Smaller gatherings, the first proper round of visiting, and a puja in the evening.

This is where an anarkali earns its place, dressed up from Dhanteras, but not competing with tomorrow.

Lakshmi Puja | Sunday, 8 November

The main night. The puja, the family dinner, the photographs that circulate for a month.

This is the statement piece, and the night to think about how the outfit moves, you’ll be sitting cross-legged for the puja, standing for photographs, eating late.

Annakut, the food offering, and a day largely at home with family.

Comfortable festive, something you can sit on the floor in, move in, and help in the kitchen in.

Mehraz Hand Painted Off White Short Anarkali is the most practical piece in this article. Hand painted cambric, a short 35-inch anarkali with a front placket and buttons, salwar, and a sheesha mul dupatta with jhallar lace. Cambric is forgiving, the length stays out of the way, and nothing about it needs managing.

Sirat Lilac V Neck Anarkali is the softer option, solid sheesha chanderi with an embroidered palazzo and a hand painted chanderi dupatta. The hand painting sits on the dupatta rather than the body, which keeps it light to wear.

Bhai Dooj | Wednesday, 11 November

The one day that involves travel. Most women are moving between homes, to a brother’s, or hosting one.

Choose something that survives a car journey and looks finished when you arrive.

What should you carry?

What colour should you wear on Diwali?

There is no prescribed colour for Diwali the way there is for Navratri, which leaves more room than people assume.

For the pujas ivory, off-white, gold and red. Red remains the most auspicious choice and suits Lakshmi Puja particularly.

For the evenings, jewel tones. Emerald, sapphire, ruby and deep amethyst are where festive dressing sits in 2026, with pastels having receded. Gota, sequin, mukaish and tissue catch diya light in a way flat colour cannot, which is the whole argument for embellishment at Diwali.

If you want one colour across all five days, deep red or green. Both suit a morning puja and an evening party, and neither will look out of place in any photograph from the week.

Can you wear black on Diwali?

Yes, with one distinction worth understanding.

Black is traditionally avoided for pujas and religious ceremonies, and in many families that convention still holds. If you’re attending Lakshmi Puja at your in-laws’ or at an elder’s home, it’s the wrong choice and you’ll feel it.

For Diwali parties, card nights and cocktail evenings, black is now entirely acceptable and has been for some years. Black with gota, black with sequins, black with mirror work, it reads as modern rather than disrespectful.

The simple rule: black for the party, colour for the puja.

Which fabrics work for a November Diwali?

This is where 2026 differs from last year, and where most advice you’ll read is out of date.

A late-October Diwali calls for georgette and chiffon light, breathable, designed for warmth. An 8 November Diwali in North India is a different evening. Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur and Chandigarh will all be properly cool after sunset, and a chiffon anarkali on Lakshmi Puja night will have you reaching for a shawl that ruins the outfit.

Chanderi is the most useful fabric of the week, enough body to hold its shape, light enough for daytime, warm enough for evening.

Tissue and sheesha work for the main night. Both catch light exceptionally well, which matters when the room is lit by diyas rather than overheads.

Silk velvet for the coldest evenings, particularly in the north. It’s also the fabric that carries straight into wedding season afterwards.

Muslin, mul and cambric stay right for the daytime occasions, and for anyone in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai or Bengaluru, where the older advice still applies.

Don’t forget Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth falls on Thursday, 29 October 2026, ten days before Diwali, and squarely inside the same shopping window.

Most women buy for both in one go, which is worth planning deliberately rather than discovering in late October. If you’re wearing red for Karwa Chauth, that’s an argument for going green, navy or off-white on Lakshmi Puja rather than red again.
